A DISCOVERY HIDDEN IN DARKNESS... A TRUTH BROUGHT TO LIGHT... __________________________________________ What if... scientific evidence of a coming extinction event was known and kept secret? What if... your survival was dependent on being chosen? What if... the only choice you had was to give up that chance? __________________________________________ Three years after NASA disclosed a top secret discovery, the human race was on the verge of extinction. A cataclysmic solar phenomenon unlike any other would wipe out all life on Earth at the end of the decade. Now, only seven years remain. Before the uprising, the nation's leaders developed radical solutions. Walls segregated regulation from rebellion. The country divided into territories. To survive, citizens were to obey the strict laws that required them to work toward a dismal future under military rule. And with the nation's leaders in alliance, vast underground colonies became mankind's single hope for survival-a fate only secured for a chosen few. When twenty-three year old Aubrey Adams returns to her hometown, a place now plagued with oppression, her sudden resistance sparks a drastic turn of events that leads her to a more sinister secret--one that comes with a dire warning: Run.

Stephen Hannock is considered one of the top American landscape painters working today. Represented in major international collections and reflecting a Romantic tradition that dates back to the Hudson River School, his majestic works are renowned for their extraordinarily luminous quality--an iridescence that is achieved through his signature technique of sandpaper-polished oil on canvas. The hushed reverie of earth and sky that is captured in these hauntingly evocative paintings echoes the idyllic grandeur of such forebears as J.M.W. Turner, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and Louis Remy Mignot, among other nineteenth-century masters. The Academy Award he shared for his landscapes on the film "What Dreams May Come" has enabled Hannock--a craftsman in an art all too rare--to reach an even wider audience. Reawakening one of the most significant styles of American painting, Stephen Hannock illuminates in this beautiful compendium the glorious wonder of the landscape around us.

A brilliant and uniquely crafted novel that is a joy ride from start to finish -- a tale of possession, obsession, and the interconnectedness of life. The year is 1960 and two young men are in a darkroom. As they develop a series of prints, one photo is not what they expect. There is something odd about it. Something strange and luminous. One unexpectedness leads to another. And another. At the heart of this adventurous novel are two women: Marilyn Monroe -- one of the most photogenic women of this century -- and Kate Barnes -- a young girl who is also astonishingly photogenic. Kate, however, rejects this gift and in doing so moves further and further from civilization -- deep into the woods -- where, unseen, she controls the action of the story. As the Sixties tumble by, the two young men become increasingly obsessed with the strangeness of the photo. Their separate quests for luminosity lead one of them higher and higher into a spiritual realm, while the other sinks lower and lower into addiction and self-destruction. But these two apparently separate journeys are really one. The same journey that all of us must make towards finding enlightenment in the ordinary and the everyday.

The Mercer family's fortune started in eighteenth-century England, increased via South African gems in the nineteenth, and is managed on an ethical basis today. But when a modern Mercer begins digging beneath the surface, the family's past suddenly appears less clear-cut than the gems they once traded. Set in the West Midlands of England in 1799 and 1999 and in Kimberley, South Africa in 1899, Luminosity tells three tales of interlinked lives where greed, lies and generosity have surprising results. Luminosity premiered at The Pit, Barbican Centre, London, by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001.

This book is about my struggle through life's lessons and trials and about the deep thoughts that go through my mind, including... spirituality, love, loss and self doubt. it's basically snapshots of my feelings and thoughts. Poetry was always a secret hobby for me and English was never a strong point for me in school. It was a very big surprise to family and friends when I first started sharing them. Because of their great comments, they gave me the courage to try and publish my work. I've never been much of a reader. Time online and in chatrooms improved my spelling and the way I put my feelings across.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Physics with an Electron-Polarized Ion Collider (EPIC-99), jointly sponsored by the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center, and the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington. It was held in Bloomington, Indiana, April 8–11, 1999. The purpose was to discuss important new physics phenomena which could be investigated with a high-luminosity asymmetric collider consisting of a beam of polarized electrons (with energy roughly 5 GeV), and a beam of polarized protons or other light ions of approximately 40 GeV energy. The Workshop brought together experts in the field who highlighted the unique potential for such a facility, and compared the prospects and challenges for this collider with present and proposed facilities around the world. The proceedings of this Workshop summarize our currently available knowledge on the physics potential for a polarized asymmetric collider. It provides a unique collection of information on the opportunities which such a facility would provide.

Recently there has been much interest in studying events with tagged forward protons at the existing and forthcoming hadronic colliders, the Tevatron and the LHC. These studies not only allow one to monitor the luminosity of the colliding protons with high accuracy but also provide new ways of investigating the subtle issues of QCD dynamics and searches for the manifestations of new physics. This book reviews the state of the art of forward physics measurements and the theoretical development. It will catalyze many new approaches within the framework of the extensive physics programme of the LHC. This in turn will stimulate closer contact between the LHC experiments as well as between the experimentalists and the theorists to maximize the potenntial of LHC physics. Contents: Diffraction of Hadrons at High Energies (A B Kaidalov); Pomeron Before and After QCD (L N Lipatov); Diffraction at HERA (P Marage); Requirements from Precision Physics at LHC on the Luminosity Accuracy (S Tapprogge); LHC Machine Instrumentation for Luminosity Measurements (L Vos & S Weisz); Evolution of Forward Multi-Particle Spectrometers at Storage Rings (P Schlein); New Silicon Detector Technologies for Forward Physics (E H M Heijne); Luminosity Monitoring at LHCb (M Ferro-Luzzi); and other papers. Readership: Academics, researchers and graduate students in high-energy, accelerator, experimental and theoretical physics.

During July 1991. a group of 99 physicists from 57 laboratories in 27 countries met in Erice for the 29th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Algeria. Argentina. Austria. Brazil. Canada. China. France. Germany. Greece. India. Ireland. Israel. Italy. New Zealand. Norway. Pakistan. Poland. Portugal. Rumania. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. Thailand. Turkey. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. the United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Education (MPI). the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research. the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The opening lecture of the School was given by Professor Lev Okun. A few remarks are in order. In the pre-Gorbachev era. Professor Okun's case was the most difficult: in spite of many invitations he was not allowed to come and lecture at Erice. Nowadays the hard times have nearly been forgotten. It is with pleasure that I recall here a discussion I had with my friend Lev Okun in my house during one of his rare visits to CERN. The after-dinner topic was Galileo Galilei and his great discovery; i. e . • the equality between gravitational and inertial masses - a discovery that we are celebrating now. four hundred years later. Here is a synthesis of Professor Okun's position: given a massive particle. the only quantity we should consider when talking about masses.
